Venue Description: Old Bethpage Village Restoration transports visitors back in time and offers them a glimpse of the slow, quiet lifestyle led by earlier inhabitants of Long Island. The 209-acre village, situated on the Nassau-Suffolk border, is a resurrection of mid-19th-century American life, with discernable Dutch and English influences. Although Old Bethpage was not an actual historic village, the restoration is a representation of the many farming villages that historically peppered the landscape. The restoration began in 1963, when Nassau County acquired the site and transformed it from farmland into what it is today. The village is complete with homes, farms, and businesses, and boasts a total of 51 original historic buildings as well as seven resurrections, all of which were saved from destruction and relocated to the site. Each of the buildings is authentically furnished according to when it was built and what function it served. Among them is the Schenck House, built circa 1730, one of the oldest Dutch farmhouses remaining in the U.S. Also standing on the site is Plainview?s historic Manetto Hill Methodist Church, dating to 1857. These relics provide the setting for costumed interpreters to portray farmers, teachers, storekeepers, blacksmiths, civic leaders, and the others who made up a typical pre-Civil War Long Island community. Civil War reenactments are a common attraction at Old Bethpage. The site also hosts family-friendly events and exhibits throughout the year, including old-time ?base ball? games, as well as the annual Long Island Fair, a traditional county agricultural fair held in the fall. Old Bethpage Village Restoration is open April-December, Wednesday-Friday 10am-4pm, Saturday-Sunday 10am-5pm. $10, $7 children 5-12, $7 seniors and volunteer firefighters, FREE for children under 5. Located at 1303 Round Swamp Road (exit 48 off the Long Island Expressway).
