Venue Description: Old Westbury Gardens is the former home of John S. Phipps, a wealthy businessman who lived during the early 20th century. Phipps was the director of U.S. Steel Corp., W. R. Grace & Co., and the Hanover Bank, and was known as an extravagant traveler, polo player, and owner of racehorses. He purchased this Nassau county property, which was then a Quaker farm, in the early 1900s and commissioned English designer George A. Crawley to construct the spacious Charles-II-style mansion where Phipps, with his wife and four children, lived for 50 years. The house is furnished with the original English antiques the family used in everyday living.

Today, it is nestled among 200 acres of formal gardens, landscaped grounds, woodlands, ponds, and lakes, all of which are open to the public. Visitors can take a guided tour through the home and gardens to learn more about their historical importance and to see how they functioned while the Phipps family resided there.

The site is available for school visits and offers a variety of children's programs and events, family programs, museum exhibits, classic car shows, indoor and outdoor concerts, botanical arts and gardening classes, and master gardener- and educator-led talks and tours relating to horticulture, art, history, design, and architecture. While there, visitors can enjoy a gift shop, plant shop, and the Café in the Woods.

Old Westbury Gardens is open every weekend beginning April 14 and it is open April 30-October 31, everyday but Tuesday, 10am-5pm. The house opens for visitors at 11am (strollers are not allowed in the house). Cars will not be admitted after 4pm. Admission is $10; $8 seniors older than 62; $5 children ages 7-12; free ages 6 and younger.

Old Westbury Gardens is located at 71 Old Westbury Road in Westbury. For more information, call 516-333-0048 or oldwestburygardens.com.
