Description: Enliven the winter school vacation week with three drop-in days of art at the Museum. Experience family-friendly gallery tours and hands-on art making for children of all ages and their adult companions. Different art projects will be offered each of the three days. Docents will guide families through the galleries and encourage children to create their own artistic responses to the art on view.
Venue Description: Spanning 145 acres, the Nassau County Museum of Art is one of the largest suburban fine arts museums in the country. The museum includes formal gardens, outdoor sculptures, the Arnold & Joan Saltzman Fine Art Building, and the Art Space for Children. The Saltzman museum is housed in a Georgian mansion designed by Ogden Codman Jr., and features mainly 19th-, 20th-, and 21st-century works, including internationally acclaimed and local artists. Its permanent collection includes the likes of Edouard Vuillard, Pierre Bonnard, and Roy Lichtenstein.
The Art Space for Children, housed in a separate building, features changing exhibitions of topics and material of interest to children. Family Sundays, free with admission, offer a day of hands-on art activities and gallery. Art classes are available for all ages and a special summer program is put on in July and August. Once outside the museum's walls, visitors can explore vast gardens designed by Marian Coffin, considered some of her finest. The gardens include specialty sections devoted solely to roses or azaleas, as well as fountains, shrubs, and walkways. The Sculpture Garden has 40 sculptures that interact with the natural environment.
Nassau County Museum of Art is located 25 miles east of New York City at 1 Museum Drive in Roslyn Harbor. It is open Tuesday-Sunday 11am-4:45pm, with the Art Space for Children open 12-4:30pm. Admission is $10 for adults, $8 for seniors and $4 for children 4-12 and students. There is a $2 parking fee on weekends. For more information, call 516-484-9337 or visit nassaumuseum.org.
