Ride the Pumpkin Patch Train

It’s the Fall harvest season so what better way to celebrate and welcome in the cooler weather than with a short ride on a vintage train to the Danbury Railway Museum’s Pumpkin Patch. Ride "The Husking Bee" Pumpkin Patch train through the historic railyard in a 1920's passenger coach, pulled by a vintage ALCo RS-1 diesel-electric locomotive (or other vintage locomotive, subject to availability) to the special pumpkin patch where each child ages 2-12 can select a free pumpkin. Everyone can enjoy some free cider & cookies. There are numerous photo ops and even a vintage tractor! Back due to its popularity last year is the “haunted caboose;” visit it if you dare! Of course, the exhibits, artifacts, and multiple operating model train layouts inside the restored over 100-year old Danbury station will be open for your education and entertainment. Out in the railyard, go inside real railroad cars and locomotives. There is a fully-stocked gift shop on the premises. The event will be held rain or shine. Reservations are recommended and can be made online at . The Danbury Railway Museum is a non-profit organization, staffed solely by volunteers, and is dedicated to the preservation of, and education about, railroad history.

Historical Reenactor: Keeping it Fresh: Colonial Food Preservation FREE

Are you interested in learning more about what life was like in New York during the colonial era? Then make sure to stop by John Jay Homestead for a presentation from reenactor Tom Hunt about what it was like to prepare for winter in the 18th and 19th centuries. From pickling to drying to salting and smoking, Tom will discuss and demonstrate many of the techniques used in early American food preservation. Admission is free. This family-friendly event will be held alongside the Homestead’s weekly Farm Market and is a great opportunity for history lovers of all ages to learn more about how our ancestors survived the frigid winters in New York State. Tenacity & Resilience: The Art of Jerry Pinkney

Honoring the work of Jerry Pinkney (1939-2021), Tenacity & Resilience: The Art of Jerry Pinkney features more than seventy illustrations, dummy books, and working drawings from seven children’s books from 1993 to 2020. The works encompass issues of social justice, resilience, and tenacity in the face of adversity. They convey powerful messages related to the history of the Civil Rights Movement in America as well as personal tales of courage and aspiration. The range of works reveals Pinkney’s multifaceted talents as an inspired master watercolorist, draftsman, and storyteller. The books represented in this show include Minty (1996), a story of Harriet Tubman in her youth, and A Place to Land: Martin Luther King, Jr. and the Speech that Inspired a Nation (2019). Works from the following children’s books are also featured: I Want to Be (1993); Goin’ Someplace Special (2001); God Bless the Child (2004); Sweethearts of Rhythm (2009); and The Little Mermaid (2020).

Autumn Teen Trek FREE

Join HRM Junior Docents on a nature walk along the Old Croton Aqueduct State Historic Park trailway, just steps from the Museum. Learn about the plants and animals, native and introduced, that can be found in our neighborhoods. They;ll help you identify them, using an online database to catalog as much local flora and fauna as you can using the iNaturalist app. Recommended for ages 12–18. Meet in the lobby at 1pm. The activity will involve walking approximately one mile along unpaved surfaces, including up and down a short hill. Wear comfortable shoes. In the event of rain, the event will be cancelled.
