3 Awesome Bookstores for Kids in Brooklyn

With the myriad of things to do in New York City with kids, it can be easy to forget how much fun it is to just sit and read. Luckily for New Yorkers, between the indoor playspaces, shows, and playgrounds, there are a handful of bookstores that cater to little ones.

These bookstores in Brooklyn have great events, classes, and workshops in addition to their wide selection of great books for kids. Check out these three bookstores in Brooklyn for kids, and one very special one in Manhattan.

Books are Magic — Cobble Hill residents own and operate this neighborhood favorite, that they call their “third child.” The care in which the books at this shop are curated is obvious and new releases are announced on a regular basis. The events calendar is chock full of great story times for kids, with at least two happening each month. It even has a book club for kids and a large dedicated children's section with several places for kids to settle in and read. Books Are Magic is located at 225 Smith Street in Cobble Hill. Greenlight — This community-centric book shop really caters to lilttle book lovers. When visiting make sure to sign up to receive the “Kids at Greenlight” email where you will stay up to date on new releases, as well as events. Each Saturday kids ages 3-8 can join in on an Author Story Time. These events include activities and crafts in addition to a reading from an author or local performer. Kids ages 9-12 can join the Greenlight Young Readers Book Group that meets once a month. Pizza is served and parents are welcome to attend. McNally Jackson — This Williamsburg bookstore has two stories of books for Brooklynites to enjoy. It also has great readng spaces for kids, with cozy pillows and benches in its children's section. Each Saturday the shop hosts a story time that includes: guest authors and illustrators, holiday celebrations, book-themed art, and storytelling that features new books and classics. Books of Wonder — This shop has been a favorite of mine since I became a mom nearly six years ago. It recently opened up a second location on the Upper West Side, the orginal one is in Chelsea, and New York families are so happy to have both. The store hosts a number of events for kids including its Teen Author Festival, book launches, and weekly story times.
