New York City YMCA’s to Celebrate Healthy Kids Day

It’s fun to stay (and learn) at the YMCA! This year the YMCA’s annual Healthy Kids Day will be held on Saturday April 21 at all 22 locations across New York City. The free event is geared toward educating kids on how to keep their minds and bodies active during the summer months.

The all-day event will feature cooking demonstrations, arts and crafts projects, bouncy houses, face painting, and more.

“Healthy Kids Day gives us an opportunity to encourage families to stay active and keep learning during the summer months,” said Sharon Greenberger, President & CEO of New York City’s YMCA in a press release. “We’re here to encourage families to try new, healthy activities as they gear up for summer.”

When school is not in session many kids here in New York City struggle with staying active. They can gain weight faster and fall behind academically. That’s why the YMCA feels it is so important to develop good, healthy habits before summer begins.

As previously mentioned different activities will be held at all of the YMCA’s in New York City and you can find the one nearest to you here. Highlights include an 80’s themed dance party at the West Side YMCA, a Family Zumba class at the Flatbush YMCA, and giant games such as Jenga and Connect 4 at the Long Island City YMCA.

“For more than 165 years, the YMCA has worked with children, families, and community leaders to help New Yorkers lead healthier lives. In 2017, 314,000 people improved their health at the YMCA, and 59,000 youth developed healthy habits in Y programs, such as swimming, youth sports, child care, afterschool, summer camp, and more,” states the official press release.

The event is free and open to the public. Those who attend Healthy Kids Day will be offered a 10% discount on camps if they register that same day.
